As we are now in the throngs of summer, we thought we would have a look at the best of island sail charter in the Vancouver area. We are so blessed in this part of the world, that we have a large number of islands to choose from around which to sail in our charters. There are literally hundreds to choose from; something which the British Columbia coastline is world renowned for. It is a picturesque playground for charterers. In the North of Vancouver Island you find Port Hardy. This island port is a gateway to some exquisite chartering territory and also has the convenience of first rate mooring and marina facilities. Also in the area is Broughton Archipelago Marine Provincial Park (just off shore from Telegraph Cove). Throughout this marine park, you can explore several smaller islands for the perfect island sail charter experience. Whilst enjoying a yacht chartering holiday, it is important to know where the hot spots are for a little land down time. Gorge Harbour and Marine Resort is just the place. Gorge Harbour lays on the edge of Desolation Sound Marine Provincial Park, which is one of the world’s most prestige cruising destinations for yacht lovers thanks to its 60km of remote coastline available for exploration. The Marina Resort is a great place to stop off and relax, enjoy the multitude of facilities on offer, or simply stock up to continue your journey. You can choose to stay a few days in the campsite, a cottage, or a spacious room, or just enjoy the marina and all there is to see and do there. Desolation Sound Marine Park is the largest Marine Park in B.C. and has over 6,350 acres of shoreline, water and wildlife. Locally, the park is referred to as having 3 major anchorage areas – Prideaux Haven, Tenedo’s Bay and Grace Harbour although there are many other safe anchorages protected by high cliffs, islands or mountainsides. Prideaux Haven This is easily one of the most beautiful anchorages in Desolation Sound. Get into your dinghy or kayak and go exploring the tiny coves, islands and inlets which make up this area. Tenedos Bay This bay is to the east of Mink Island in Homfray Channel. The most protected and favorite places to anchor are on the northern shore or at the head of the bay, near to Unwin Lake. There is an easily visible trail from the anchorage which leads you directly to Unwin Lake. This is a delightful lake to have a fresh water swim and is a great place to base yourself and explore by kayak Mink, Curme and Otter Islands.
