Vancouver Cruising with Whales! Vancouver Cruising with Whales! Vancouver Cruising with Whales
Nanaimo
Vancouver and Nanaimo are the best places on earth to go whale watching. Even better if you are keeping watch whilst cruising on a board a yacht. At the beginning of the year, a group of lucky fisherman had a very special experience when two humpback whales got up close and personal. A truly magical moment. There is nothing better than seeing such a beautiful creature in their natural habitat as you enjoy the water and stunning sea views. Your chances of seeing these majestic beasts is pretty good on the waters around Nanaimo, especially between April and October when Orca Whales frolic in the south. But if you want to go with the professionals, there are various whale watching organisations in the area who host responsible whale tours. There is also the opportunity to see Humpbacks, Grey Whales, Minke Whales, Sea Lions, Dall’s Porpoises, Bald Eagles, and Harbour Seals. If you are lucky of course. The Orca Whales reside in the south for much of the year, and as they are very social animals they travel in three familial pods known as ‘J Pod’, ‘K Pod’ and ‘L Pod’. As well as those in residence there are also what […]

You may question whether it is a good idea to bring children along on a yacht charter in Vancouver, and you would be right to give it some serious consideration for many reasons. There is safety to consider and the worry that being cooped up will cause boredom for the young ones resulting in stress for the adults. However, there are more reasons to take them along with you, as long as you plan and take necessary precautions. There are four key things to contemplate beforehand: Safety on board Discussing the safety rules of a charter before the trip is a must. The children must be briefed as to where the safety equipment is (such as life jackets and other floatation aids), and how to use it. This may seem daunting, but actually, kids love to play pirate, and adore boats. They will really enjoy the learning experience as they will see it as an important part of their role on board. Children love to be given ownership over things, and feel a part of it all. Rule enforcement will be necessary, but you can do it in such a way that is fun, engaging, and not at all dictatorial. […]

One of the most necessary, but odious jobs, you should do as an owner of a yacht in Vancouver or anywhere for that matter! Is the annual anti-fouling of your yacht. It’s a very important winter maintenance job that will give your yacht excellent protection against fouling that can take hold on your hull. If left then this fouling can cause you lots of ongoing maintenance problems, not to mention a fall in the boats performance, safety and hull structure! Sound harsh? Well by being prepared and anti-fouling your boat regularly you can give it the best protection for the next sailing season. Here’s how… Your yacht needs to be out of the water and a thorough check of the hull performed, looking for any damage such as blistering paint or cracking. Once any damage is repaired then the hull will need to be sanded (keyed) and primed ready for the first coat of anti-fouling paint. The paint, is a specialized formulation of water-soluble bio-active ingredients and compounds, which will slow the formation and growth of marine organisms like algae and barnacles. It is well worth following the manufacturers guidelines on how to apply the anti-foul paint and the number […]

Vancouver Island – an in-depth history Vancouver Island – an in-depth history If you are travelling with young ones,
Nanaimo
So here at Nanaimo we often nod to the history of  this great region, but we have never really looked right back, in depth, at the history of this land. That changes now. In this article we will look at how the island first came to being, who the first settlers were, and other key points in Vancouver Island’s history. We will also discuss how you can make your mark in the history books of the future. How was the Island formed? So as you probably know, all land is formed by a shift in plates. Vancouver Island was formed around 150 million years ago, when volcanic activity pushed sedimentary rock upwards from the sea floor to form the island landscape. Around 12,000 years BC the retreating of glaciers allowed the Strait of Juan de Fuca to be formed as the Pacific Ocean flooded inland. The first tree can be dated back to 377 BC – it was a yellow cedar – a variety of tree which can now be seen in abundance across the region. Of course it is interesting to note, new islands can be formed at any time, and also be lost. There are a number of […]

Nanaimo
The Nanaimo Marine Festival started in 1966 as a celebration of Canada’s 100th birthday and will be 50 years old in 2016. Happy Birthday! This year’s festivities will be held from the 21st of July to the 24th. If you are on a yacht charter holiday throughout this period, the event is really one not to be missed – especially for boating enthusiasts. The main course of the festival if you will, is most certainly the world renowned Great International World Championship Bathtub Race. Last year saw a change in how this race ran. Previously racers would end their journey at Departure Bay beach, but despite that glorious bit of irony it was changed to mean both the start and finish lines are situated at Maffeo Sutton Park. It was believed this change was made last year, to iron out any potential difficulties before the celebrations of 2016 hit. Loyal Nanaimo Bathtub Society member Bill McGuire says the change was made because people viewing the race would often only watch the start or the end. Now viewers can more easily see both, which is of course a more pleasurable experience. Not only is this better for the people watching the […]

Nanaimo
Sailing safety is of utmost importance when you are off on a trip. Before setting sail, it is a good idea to have some sort of a checklist in your mind, or better still, a physical checklist which you can use to make sure you and the rest of your crew and companions are prepared for the journey ahead. A checklist used before setting sail, will limit the possibility for problems once underway. Throughout this article we will look at some of the things you will want to bear in mind before setting sail. Check weather report Not once, not twice, but continuously. With modern technology as it is now it is easier than ever to check the weather continuously, and as it always has been, a very important part of yacht safety procedures. Weather can change and turn at the drop of a hat, and so it is always best to be prepared for all sorts of weather eventualities. Also be aware of the different difficulties that the especially cold weather can bring, as well as the hot. In cold weather hypothermia can become a risk, and in hot dehydration is one of the biggest risks. Know how to […]

Nanaimo
With Nanaimo Yacht Charters there are a couple of itinerary options for exploring the glorious Gulf Islands of British Columbia. Within the Gulf Island cluster, we have Gabriola Island, Galiano Island, Maybe Island, Pender Island, Salt Spring Island, and Saturna Island. Situated in the Salish Sea, just off the coast of Nanaimo the Gulf Islands each have their own unique character whilst sharing the natural breath-taking beauty the region is renowned for. The people that live on the islands are an extremely diverse and creative bunch which makes the area great fun for visitors. You can find retired millionaires, spiritualists, writers, artists, musicians, cheesemakers and more! This eclectic mix of people means that the whole place is set to ‘island time’ which basically means sit back, relax, enjoy the scenery and don’t rush around. These islands sit along the eastern coastline of Vancouver Island and run from Saturna near the UC and Canada border, and up to Nanaimo. There are around half a dozen bigger islands and this is where you will find the before-mentioned residents, and then there are several-hundred smaller islands that are favourites for sea-sportsman, wildlife, and greenery! There are lots of activities to do across this […]

Sailing in Vancouver with Technology He was quoted in the Nanaimo Bulletin recently: So this got us thinking here at Nanaimo, what tech innovations have there been in the sailing industry? Well lots over the last 40 years apparently. Let us walk you through some of our favourites in no particular order… Pod Drive Manoeuvrability These devices are for power boats. They enable better manoeuvrability in docking but also in other tight situations – aiding in propulsion control. Dock’N Go started the trend with their Sense 50, and Saildrive technology. There are now lots of other versions on the market, and they have become the power boaters favourite tool.  GPS Sounds simple, as we all use it all the time now on our smart phones to help us get around –even when walking! But the complexity of the systems available now for use on board a vessel when at sea is simply mind-boggling. There is celestial navigation, underwater navigation, and all manners of chart maps. The accuracy of weather reports is also really useful, as you can get the latest information straight to deck thanks to satellites. The geek in any sailor gets excited by the options. You can also […]
