Desolation Sound Marine Park is the largest Marine Park in B.C. and has over 6,350 acres of shoreline, water and wildlife. Locally, the park is referred to as having 3 major anchorage areas – Prideaux Haven, Tenedo’s Bay and Grace Harbour although there are many other safe anchorages protected by high cliffs, islands or mountainsides. Prideaux Haven This is easily one of the most beautiful anchorages in Desolation Sound. Get into your dinghy or kayak and go exploring the tiny coves, islands and inlets which make up this area. Tenedos Bay This bay is to the east of Mink Island in Homfray Channel. The most protected and favorite places to anchor are on the northern shore or at the head of the bay, near to Unwin Lake. There is an easily visible trail from the anchorage which leads you directly to Unwin Lake. This is a delightful lake to have a fresh water swim and is a great place to base yourself and explore by kayak Mink, Curme and Otter Islands. At Tanedos Bay there is also a campsite, pit toilets and an information board. Grace Harbour If you’re already in the area of Desolation Sound and think the scenery […]

Whilst on a yachting holiday in Nanaimo you are sure to want to sample some of the best local sights and activities our beautiful city has to offer. What we love most about Nanaimo is the diversity of what it has to offer. Relaxing on your yacht is undoubtedly one of the best parts of vacationing with us here at Nanaimo Yacht Charters, but also, we know how important it is to try new things. That is a very important part of taking a holiday. In this top tip to-do list we will walk you through some of the weirdest and wonderful experiences you can have here whilst holidaying. So in no particular order; let’s start with the weird… Jean’s Cannery What is a cannery I hear you ask? Well, it is exactly what it says on the tin (do you see what I did there). This family business started over 50 years ago and is known for producing tinned pacific seafood goods. The founder, after whom the cannery is still named, Armand St Jean was born in 1913 and grew the business to success it still enjoys today. It all started with him smoking oysters and selling them to […]
The Arctic Ocean is of great importance to us here at Nanaimo, as it is linked with the North Pacific which we enjoy daily, via the Bering Sea. So, we wanted to take some time to look at one of the greatest challenges the Arctic is facing at the moment; plastic. Now this of course, is not a new problem. But it is one that is becoming increasingly pressing, and increasingly widespread. In September, a research team from Exeter University in England, found that plastic is polluting even the most remote ice flows of the Arctic. The Arctic Mission party discovered blocks of polystyrene in areas of ocean covering hundreds of kilometres, which was recently covered by ice all years around. Take a moment to let that image sink in. This unfathomable find was merely 1000 miles from the north pole. Once where ice dominated, now the highly irritating and environmentally cataclysmic poly-plastic stands. Incomprehensible. Plastic is so threatening to the oceans ecosystem because it breaks down into microplastics which are ingested by creatures large and small, which we as humans then eat. This plastic catastrophe is literally affecting every living organism in the world. The layer of sea […]

Yachting in heavy weather in Vancouver Being prepared is the most important thing when embarking on a Vancouver yachting trip. When it comes to the weather, you must be prepared for all of the eventualities as it can turn on you at any time. When particularly rough weather hits, the best course of action of course is to head back to shore where possible but where this is not possible or practical everyone aboard should be ready for the worst. The preparation for heavy weather There is plenty of opportunity to be prepared for heavy weather, if you have kept a proper lookout with a keen and well trained ‘weather-eye’, and also kept abreast of the latest developments over radio and other forms of mobile communications. What preparation is necessary will vary according to the type of boat, and the size and the design of the vessel. To be well prepared, determine position of storm, the direction of the wind, and the speed and the estimated time that the storm will take to get to you. Predicting heavy weather It can be impossible to predict the weather so to speak, but it is possible to learn some tell-tale signs of a […]
