Whilst boating in the beautiful waters around Vancouver Island and Nanaimo with young ones, there is the possibility that you will need more than just the stunning scenery, beautiful marine life, and a turn at the wheel to amuse them. For a successful trip, you need to prepare for the worst… a bored child aboard your vessel. Here we will look at some of the best water activities for you to undertake with your young ones whilst holidaying on one of our yachts. 1. Boating & Sailing No matter what age your young shipmates are, there will be a degree of sailing you can teach them. There is a lot to sailing a yacht, and there are bits and pieces you can get them to do to assist you. Children and young people love feeling needed, and feeling useful, as well as feeling a sense of responsibility for something. So why not use that to your advantage? You could teach them to tie knots, get them to tie down or tidy away any loose items on board, maybe even get them to use the radio. Kids love binoculars, so you could make them look out for an hour or so […]

Nanaimo
On our 14 day Desolation Sound package, you get to charter your boat through to the stunning Princess Louisa National Park – a gem of the Nanaimo region. The Princess Louisa National Park was established on July the 24th, 1965 – over fifty years ago. It spans 964 hectares and boasts mountains, forests, and intricate shorelines – perfect for waterborne exploration. Glaciers from thousands of years ago helped form the majestic granite gorges that frame the park. Mountains tipped with snow emerge out of the sea and stretch to heights of over 2000 meters. The oceans surrounding this impressive landscape could be mistaken for a lake due to their placidity. The famous Princess Louisa Inlet do move with the tides, but currents are virtually non-existent except for the Malibu Rapids that create the entrance to the inlet. The inlet is often referred to as Suivoolot by the natives, which translates to mean sunny and warm. The waters in this part of the park which is almost completed enclosed, are around 1000 feet deep, and half a mile wide. The marine side of the park is managed by the Princess Louisa International Society in cooperation with BC (British Columbia) Parks. The society […]

If you are planning on doing some sailing in Vancouver this year and not sure when the best time of year to go is, well read on to discover more about the climate in Canada and what you might expect during the different seasons while sailing in Vancouver. Canadian Climate Canada is often thought of as having cold weather and snow, but in actual fact the climate in Canada is as diverse as it’s landscape! There are 4 distinct seasons, throughout the country, and daytime summer temperatures can reach 35 degrees Celsius, and the thermostat can drop as low as -25 degrees in the winter! Generally mild moderate temperatures are common during the Spring and Fall. Out on the prairies in the summer it can be very hot and dry, but on the coast if you are sailing in Vancouver it can be milder, whilst the centre of the country can get very humid. Across the country spring is generally pleasantly warm, whilst Autumn can be crisp and cool, but the landscape is stunning with the the fall colours of orange and red bringing to life the landscape. Gulf Island: The Chartering Romance Gulf Island: The Chartering Romance Gulf Island
Nanaimo
A hassle-free getaway for two through the heart of the gulf islands. When one thinks of the LOVEBOAT, the image of a luxury cruise liner with lovers promenading about the decks comes to mind. For my husband and I, it was the idea of chartering a sailboat to explore the Gulf Islands on a four-day getaway just for two; a chance to relax and re-connect to ourselves, each other and to the sea. After dropping off our young children at Nana’s and heading south to Nanaimo, Greg and I are giddy like two teenagers alone for the first time. Our station wagon is packed with crab traps, gear and provisions as we drive to Stones Marina in Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. We’re chartering with Nanaimo Yacht Charters and Sailing School, located in a convenient and central location to the Gulf Islands, and a direct flight or ferry from Vancouver. Within minutes of pulling into the main dock’s unloading zone, we are met by friendly staff member Trevor Matthew, a certified instructor, who promptly leads us down the marina to our gorgeous Beneteau 331, Kala Kala. Unzipping the fully enclosed cockpit cover, past the binnacle instrument pod and steering wheel, we […]

Nanaimo
Perhaps the hustle and bustle of daily life has given you the need for a rest. If this is the case, why not consider taking a yacht charter to the wonderfully timeless and restful port that is Egmont. If it’s some good old-fashioned ‘Sunshine Coast’ living that you’re after, you’re certain to find it here. The residents are wonderfully welcoming and will be keen to greet you and share their relaxed approach to life. As you dock your yacht at the port, do take the time to visit the Skookumchuck Narrows Provincial Park. A beautiful location to walk some of their well-maintained paths and enjoy some wonderful views. You’ll also experience a traditional welcome at some of Egmont’s venues including its city hall and local store at Bathgates. If you’re looking to travel further, and have the urge to see some of the kayakers in action, why not take the easy 8km hike for a fantastic view of the raging rapids. As you travel towards your destination, look out for interesting facts on history of the area. Make sure you don’t miss the best views of Egmont at Roland Point. Pack your camera and a picnic and you’ll easily make […]

About On our list of must visit places on a bareboat yacht charter around Vancouver Island, would have to be the stunning Princess Louisa Inlet on the British Columbia Coast. The inlet is approximately 8km (5 miles long), is almost completely enclosed and is never wider than 800 metres (½ mile) for it’s entire length. It can be found at the north eastern end of the Jervis Inlet, parts of the Inlet form the Princess Louisa Marine Provincial Park. Why visit? The Inlet is a unique example of fiordland on the pacific coast, and has a charm and beauty that really must be seen. The breathtaking scenery includes sheer granite cliffs rising from the placid water, along with dozens of waterfalls scattered along the coastline, created from the sun melting the snow on the mountains. At the head of the Inlet, you will encounter Chatterbox Falls which takes water from the surrounding mountain meadows which then cascade 40 metres into the Inlet throughout the year. Getting there: The entrance to the Inlet by boat is through a narrow entrance at Malibu Rapids where there can be a fast current of up to 7-10 knots, especially at spring tide, so caution […]
